On Sunday, July 23rd, TSS Live! presents a very special event! Join us for a Napa Valley-inspired evening of artisan pizza and wine, followed by the music of singer Susan Kohler and singer/songwriter Rupert Wates.

For those of you who were fortunate to have experienced singer/songwriter Rupert Wates performing at TSS Live! #2 in 2014, and then the following year for #14 (we’re up to #24 now…) like Susan Kohler did, you know that his songs rank among the finest ever written. Susan was so inspired by Rupert’s material that she imagined an album featuring nine of Rupert’s songs, arranged by the incomparable jazz pianist, Jeff Colella. Over the past year, Susan, Jeff and bassist Chris Colangelo recorded the core tracks for the album, Wide Open Heart. The disc was recently mixed and mastered by Randall Michael Tobin and will be newly released at this concert!

After the “Napa Valley” sit-down dinner, Susan, Jeff and Chris will open the concert with selections from Wide Open Heart as well as songs from Susan’s Jazz/Great American Songbook discography. Rupert will join Susan during the first set. After intermission and yummy desserts, Rupert will take center stage, with Susan and friends joining him during the performance. The entire evening promises to be filled with artistry of food, wine and song; certainly an event you’ll be talking about months or even years from now.

Check out Susan and Rupert’s bios below, then press the RSVP link at the end of the page to reserve your seats (before they’re all gone)!

Susan Kohler Wide Open Heart

Susan Kohler is an accomplished writer, actress, composer and recording artist in Southern California. She has appeared on episodic television, daytime drama, and many independent films. Susan has performed, written and directed shows in Los Angeles theatre for over 25 years. Along with her writer’s hat, she’s directed and choreographed theatrical and video productions for her contemporary musical group, Licensed to Sing, with critically acclaimed Celebration U.S.Oh!, an original USO tribute.

As a solo artist, she is known for her exciting and sensual singing voice. CD Baby reviewers claim that with her melodious voice,” “she sets a new high standard in interpreting and delivering ‘standards’.” Locally, she performs with live symphony and pops orchestras from her compilation of jazz CDs: My Romance, My Favorite Gentlemen and Cocktail Napkins. Wide Open Heart, the Songs of Rupert Wates is being released at this concert!

As a songwriter, her focus is writing music for children; her song Lullaby received Finalist Honors in the Great American Song Contest 2016. In 2013, she wrote and composed the music for A Delicate Light, a short children’s tale. The following year in December 2014, she developed the story into a one-act musical with additional works by Glenn Longacre. It was this musical play that prompted Susan and her writing partner, Ratziel Bander, to develop it into a film script, illuminating the struggles and victories of the life changing experiences endured by all individuals.

Susan’s works are known to be inspiring and optimistic. It’s no wonder those attitudes prevail in her breakthrough book, “How to Communicate With Alzheimer’s,” a comprehensive guide for family caregivers to ascertain the need for human connectedness with this worthy population.

Her artistic expression embraces many avenues and touches many lives.

RW Prayer - Poster Frame

Rupert Wates was born in London, and he is “a ridiculously talented musician,” said Kitchen Sink House Concerts in Arizona.

He has been a full-time songwriter since 1992 when he signed an exclusive deal with Eaton Music Publishing. He has written songs in all kinds of styles for all kinds of artists. Wayne Slater-Lunsford, writing in Concerts In Your Home reviews, said Rupert is “one of those rare artists who leaves an audience better than he found them.” Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange considers him “a prime figure in American music who’s just biding his time until he’s discovered.” And Ryan Moore of AMP The Magazine wrote that he is “more compelling, more sympathetic and more emotionally accessible than many other modern performers.”

Moving to Paris in 2001, Rupert developed his skills as a singer and performer and formed his own group. In 2005 he recorded the album Sweet or Bitter Wine, his first as a solo artist. The album was released on the Mainstem label in autumn 2005.

Since September 2006, he has been based in the USA. His music has found a warm reception in America. The Forwardian Arts Society, in describing a recent performance, wrote, “It was as if Mr. Wates was standing at the well of humanity and drawing up the emotions and experiences of mankind to the surface where they could nourish those who partook of them from his vocal and musical instruments.”

Since coming to the US, Rupert has won over 30 songwriting awards.

Wates averages 170 live shows a year, and he has performed in every state in America to critical acclaim. “[Wates] made us all sit up pop-eyed at what he could do with six strings,” wrote Keith Harrelson of Moonlight on the Mountain in Alabama. And in Concerts In Your Home reviews, C. Murphy wrote, “Our audience was spellbound for the duration of his performance.”

He has released six albums. His recordings have gained outstanding reviews and continue to be aired on college and mainstream radio all over the world.

Discography: Colorado Mornings (2016), The Rank Outsiders Ball (2014), At the Losers’ Motel (2012), Joe’s Café (2010), Dear Life (2008), Coast to Coast (2007) and Sweet or Bitter Wine (2005).

In 2010 Wates released Joe’s Café, an album of 15 original songs based on true stories, each interpreted by a different vocalist, retelling the stories of ordinary American people. Through them we trace the story of America itself: through two world wars, the Dust Bowl depression, Vietnam and the struggle for Civil Rights, all the way to the present day. Recorded live in the studio in a single weekend, the album’s warm sound evokes the welcoming atmosphere of an all-night café, where friends gather to share their stories. Featured virtuoso musicians on the recording include Darol Anger on violin and Michael Manring on bass.

Joe’s Café has been presented very successfully at the Fringe Festivals throughout North America including Hamilton (Ontario), Kansas City, Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Victoria (British Columbia) and San Francisco, and in other venues from New York City to the Southeastern United States.

The show won Best Music Revue in the San Francisco Fringe Festival.

Audiences everywhere respond to Rupert Wates’ brand of melodic art/folk—haunting songs that ring true.
