Multi-Language Audiobooks Geared for Young Adults

Maria Kaufmann has a mission: to help young adults learn and master foreign language skills. She is accomplishing this goal with her collections of mostly original short stories that have been published in the form of seven hard-cover books featuring the simultaneous display of English, German, French and Spanish on every two-page spread. In this way, young readers can read sentence by sentence in their native language, and see the corresponding sentences in the other three languages on the same pages (as shown in the excerpt below).

To further enrich the language immersion experience, Maria’s publishing company, Pro Lingua Press, recorded all seven book titles as audiobooks, resulting in a collection of 28 CD sets (seven sets in each of the four languages). A talented cast of English, German, French and Spanish voice actors and directors converged on Theta Sound Studio over the course of several months, bringing these stories to life. This was followed by the editing of each story and the mastering of every title. Having first worked with Randy Tobin in the typesetting and layout of “The Clairvoyant Star,” Maria had Randy design the CD packaging for all 28 titles based on the original artwork from each book cover.

The combination of the written texts plus the audiobook version of the language, allows a young adult (or an adult wishing to learn a new language) an immersion into that language equaled only by living in a country where that language is mostly spoken.

Besides being educational, the stories are entertaining and present scenarios where not so simple choices affect the destiny of each character.

This is by far the largest project in the history of Theta Sound Studio. But for Maria and Randy Tobin, it’s “Mission Accomplished!”
